I am proud to say that my mother is one of my best friends.

It wasn’t always this way. For many years, I took my mother for granted. I would come into the house in a whirlwind, talking about myself and my life. I rarely ever asked her how she was, because she was mom, and not a human being with feelings, wants, and needs.

A song that reminds you of a best friend.
A song that reminds you of a best friend.

It has taken me the better part of 20 years to finally realize that my mom is the only person in this world who has always had my back. No matter what stupid mistakes I make, she still loves me unconditionally. (Trust me, I have made many.)

She has doled out plenty of tough love.

She has lifted me up and talked me down. She has wiped my tears and she helped save me from the boogeyman. She knows me better than anyone. We share the same sense of humor, and we also share a bit of a temper. (It’s the Italian, I bet.)

Our tiffs never last long, because one of us always ends up apologizing. Neither one of us likes to be on the outs with the other.

My mom loves Rod Stewart. I know she loves this particular song as well. The lyrics are perfect. In my mothers eyes, I am still her little girl. My own daughter is quickly facing young adulthood, and even though she doesn’t read this blog, I also dedicate this song to her.

I hope that she and I will end up being best friends someday, too.

“Forever Young” by Rod Stewart

May the good Lord be with you
Down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness
surround you when you’re far from home
And may you grow to be proud
Dignified and true
And do unto others
As you’d have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart you’ll always stay
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young, Forever Young

May good fortune be with you
May your guiding light be strong
Build a stairway to heaven
with a prince or a vagabond

And may you never love in vain
and in my heart you will remain
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young
Forever Young

And when you finally fly away
I’ll be hoping that I served you well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime
No one can ever tell

But whatever road you choose
I’m right behind you, win or lose
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young ,Forever Young
Forever Young, Forever Young
For, Forever Young, Forever Young
