I grew up on music from an era before my time. I had my mother’s record collection at my fingertips and my radio was often tuned in to Magic 105.7, the local oldies channel.

I kept my love for the oldies hidden for much of my youth, out of fear of being teased by my friends. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized it was nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of.

For the last few months we have heard many lame ass songs. It was fun, but now it’s time to delve into my favorite genre.

I only wish I had cleavage like that.

I went in search of songs that I haven’t heard in decades, and much to my surprise, I still knew all of the lyrics.

I still have no idea what a dewey decimal is, though.

One of my favorite singers from back in the day is Sam Cooke, the King of Soul. He reigned supreme between 1957 and 1964. His death at the age of 33 is still cloaked in mystery.

His voice could melt butter, or if you are poor, margarine.

I used to have a cassette tape of all of his songs that I diligently recorded one night off of the radio. It’s long gone now, but thanks to technology and YouTube, here’s my fav in all it’s soulful glory.

Bring it on home to me by Sam Cooke

If you ever change your mind
About leaving, leaving me behind
Oh-oh, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me, yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah)

I know I laughed when you left
But now I know I only hurt myself
Oh-oh, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me, yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah)

I’ll give you jewellery and money, too
That ain’t all, that ain’t all I’ll do for you
Oh, if you bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me, yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah)

You know I’ll always be your slave
‘Til I’m buried, buried in my grave
Oh honey, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me, yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah)

One more thing
I tried to treat you right
But you stayed out, stayed out at night
But I forgive you, bring it to me
Bring your sweet loving
Bring it on home to me, yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah)
Yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah)…
