The movie “Ghost” had just hit the theaters. My friend and I were driving around in her hellbeast of a car, a giant green Buick LeSabre, the year I don’t recall. From the 70’s for sure, this was a monster of an automobile with its own zip code.

The song “Unchained Melody” had made a comeback thanks to Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore (and clay.) Of course we had heard the song before, but it was so over the top that we couldn’t help ourselves after the 20th listen (the radio overplayed the fuck out of it) but to sing along dramatically.

Two chubby 16-year-old giggling girls in a mammoth eyesore of a car, acting all kinds of silly, came to a stop at a red light.

A “brand new” compact car full of jocks pulled up next to us. They laughed and pointed, look at these two losers! Ha ha ha. (God, I hated high school.)

I was able to sink down so that they couldn’t see me. My friend, who was in the driver’s seat, didn’t have the same luxury.

Honestly, I never really cared for the song. Any version, for that matter.

That was until I was watching Family Guy the other night on TBS and a commercial came on for a new Apple whatever the fuck is it. A phone or an app?

I don’t know. My iPhone 6 Plus is now old technology, I just can’t keep up.

The artist’s name is Lykke Li. Once I found the entire song on YouTube and plugged in my trusty headphones, her voice almost (but not quite) brought me to tears.

I’ll totally understand if you prefer the original by The Righteous Brothers or Elvis. I’m usually a traditionalist myself when it comes to music but I do love a great cover song. She does put her own spin on it.

Please let me know what you think in the comments.

Unchained Melody by Lykke Li  2017  Original by The Righteous Brothers 1965

Oh, my love
My darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time

And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?

I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Yes, lonely rivers sigh, “Wait for me, wait for me
I’ll be coming home, wait for me”

Oh, my love
My darling
I’ve hungered, hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time

And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?

I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me
